Saltpond Sod-Cutting Ceremony (Construction of 30No. Lockable Stores and Ancillary Facilities)

A sod-cutting ceremony for the long-anticipated Saltpond Market project was held on 8th May 2024, marking a significant milestone for the improvement of the Saltpond market. The event, which began at 1:48 pm, was graced by dignitaries including the Member of Parliament, Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
The ceremony commenced with an opening prayer led by the moderator, who welcomed attendees and expressed gratitude to the chiefs, notably Nana Gyan Amankwanda VII, for their support. The moderator reaffirmed that the project aimed to address the increasing business activities at the Saltpond market and enhance conditions for traders. He appealed for cooperation from all stakeholders, including chiefs, youth, and traders, to ensure the project is completed on time.
Hon. Ophelia Mensah Hayford acknowledged the role of the chiefs and emphasized the government’s commitment to improving the working conditions for traders. She assured constituents that her office would monitor the project to ensure timely completion and the provision of better facilities for market operators.
Nana Gyan Amankwanda VII expressed appreciation to the MP and MCE for their efforts in bringing the project to fruition. Highlighting the poor conditions of the market, he recalled his persistent advocacy for the project and appealed for the recruitment of locals to maximize economic benefits for the community. He provided details about the project, which is expected to be completed within six months and will include additional facilities to improve market operations.
The contractor, Sikasem Company, pledged to commence work immediately, adhere to the schedule, and deliver a quality project. He assured stakeholders of his commitment to meet the expectations of the community.
After the formal ceremony and a closing prayer, the team proceeded to the old market for a brief ritual. The MP, MCE, and chiefs agreed to hold traditional rites on Friday in line with local customs.
