As part of the efforts to deepen relations and involve the relevant stakeholders in the operations of its mining activities, Management of the Mfantseman Municipal Assembly led by the Hon. Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Ike Lord Ennu in collaboration with Atlantic Lithium Limited, a mining company in the Municipality, held a meeting on April 29, 2022 to deliberate on pertinent issues regarding their operations, compensation to affected farmers and landholders and their social responsibilities towards their operational communities, namely Abonko, Anokye, Kuntu and Ewoyaa.
Also in attendance were Nkusukum Traditional Leaders led by Nana Kwesi Brebo III, the acting president of Nkusukum Traditional Council.
The acting CEO of the company, Mr Len Kolff, thanked Nananom, landholders and everyone present for honouring the invitation to be part of this all-important deliberations.
In a brief address by the MCE, he urged both the farmers and landlords to continue to demand whatever compensation is rightfully due them.
The company`s operations manager, Mr. Iwan Williams indicated that they full-scale mining has not yet began, rather they are prospecting to ascertain the quantum or quantity of Lithium deposits in the catchment areas. Also, it was indicated that initial contract agreement was signed for Twelve years and should they discover more Lithium after that period, the agreement may be extended to Fifteen years, thus when they are through with the prospecting and are satisfied with the quantum of the mineral deposits.
Nananom admonished that, as a matter of principle, the Company should inform farmers, landholders and or their representatives before any heavy machine, be it tractor or excavator passes through their farms to avoid confrontation. The Chief Geologist, Mr. Abdul Razak Shaibu Balla assured the Chiefs that they will continuously engage with the farmers before entry.
The Chiefs reminded the company of their cooperate-social responsibility towards the community and the municipality as a whole and made a humble request to the Management of the Company to make conscious efforts to support the children from the mining communities through scholarship schemes for a brighter future for them.
